My family is from Germany and hold a belief that broken porcelain brings good luck. It’s a popular custom to break porcelain on the doorstep of a newlywed couple (people even smash toilet seats on their porches!) to bring them luck in their marriage. I grew up not feeling bad about breaking my mom’s china because I thought it would bring me good luck!

I believe that this is also a tradition in celebrations in Greece. They brake dishes so the loud noise scares evil spirits that may be around the celebration.
